Canoeing – C1

For 1 Player

Canoes are used extensively for both competition and leisure, including racing, whitewater, touring and camping, freestyle, and general recreation. Canoeing has been part of the Olympics since 1936. The shape, length, and material of the canoe’s hull are determined by its intended usage. Canoes were primarily dugouts or built of bark on a wood frame, but construction supplies changed to canvas on a wood frame, then to aluminum. Most modern canoes are constructed of molded plastic or composite materials such as fiberglass.

Canoes have been constructed by cultures all throughout the world, including some intended for use with sails and outriggers. Until the mid-1800s, canoes were an important mode of transportation for exploration and trade, and they are still used in some regions today, sometimes with the addition of an outboard engine. Where the canoe had a major role in history, such as the northern United States, Canada, and New Zealand, it continues to be a popular culture topic.
