Standup Paddling
Stand Up Paddling is a worldwide competition and one of the world’s fastest growing recreational sports. It can be performed on rivers, lakes, canals, whitewater, and the ocean – pretty much anywhere there is water. In addition to world-class contests, competitors enjoy stand up paddling for health and as a unique way to view the sites.
Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is precisely what its name implies: standing up on a board and paddling. The sport has several versions and is regarded as one of the world’s fastest growing recreational activities.
One of the advantages of SUP is its versatility as an activity. Paddlers can be found on rivers, canals, streams, lakes, the ocean, and even wildwater. While many athletes compete on flatwater, many also surf the ocean.
SUP is considered to have originated in Africa, gained popularity in Hawaii in the 1940s, and can today be seen in countries and on waterways all over the world.
Sprint events (typically over 200 metres) are common in competition, as are longer races (19.50 km) and technical races (about three kilometres).
